So why write about suffering the day after Thanksgiving? Why, to be grateful for it, of course.
I am reading a book about an inmate at Perryville Prison, and she relates how her suffering was transformative. Her pain became her purpose.
And I understand this, because there are emotional prisons as well.
When I wrote “The Shimmering” it was during a time of unbearable emotional pain. The emotional pain was so real I felt it physically in my gut, and I carried this relentless, haunting ache for three years during which time period I would read inspirational books desperately seeking relief.
It was during one such session of reading and relief seeking that “The Shimmering” was, call me crazy, “downloaded” during an unsolicited trance or Moment of Grace. I have never sought mystical experiences and have never had a trance before or after that moment. However, as a result of that moment, the writing poured out helping me gain perspective. A perspective I hope to share.
Any wisdom contained in “The Shimmering” is not my own, as I was merely a conduit and not the source.
Though the work is fiction, the truths are real. Suffering can be transformative, the supernatural realm exists, and there is an Omnipotent Unifying Force that seeks to draw us upward.
Even after death.

Lance Edgerton resents his mother moving him to a remote ghost town and resolves to scientifically disprove the supernatural lore creating local tourism, but his plan backfires in shocking discoveries that transform the dark historical crimes of the community.
Having lost his pitching finger to a lawnmower, Lance cannot join the baseball team at his new High School, and he becomes a comrade to two fellow misfits: a mute orphan named Whisper, and Manuel, an out of shape wannabe soccer player.
The three of them investigate the hauntings in the ancient mining town, and Lance’s scientific bent leads to the discovery of a crystal cavern revealing a level of consciousness known as the shimmering. He and his friends develop an ability to see the shimmering light fields around people, and Lance begins to monitor the auras with a tri-magna-meter from his chemistry class. His continued studies lead to a theory that the shimmering has a hierarchy of colors that heighten with physical and emotional health.
Lance’s theory reveals Whisper to be critically in danger of suicide.
Desperate to save his friend’s life, Lance applies all his scientific ability to uncover the crime that caused her condition, and in a final conflict with the murderer who left Whisper orphaned, Lance wields his knowledge of the shimmering in a final conflict with the perpetrator – an act that has lasting consequences on the historic hauntings.
Complete at 54,000 words, THE SHIMMERING, was inspired by working with foster children and researching the actual ghost town of Jerome, Arizona. It will appeal to Young Adult readers who enjoyed HOLES and A WRINKLE IN TIME.
